SOCIAL MATERIAL was a group workshop developed by PUBLIC PALACE as part of Bare Bones with The Farm. The lab used a single material: a 15 × 25 metre white drape purchased from eBay in 2016, as a shared object for investigation and collective action.

Guided by shared art-making methodologies, participants were invited to investigate, manipulate and respond to the material, considering its spatial implications in relation to their own bodies and the collective body.

Each action within the lab was framed as an ‘attempt’, a proposal or action oriented toward achieving a desire collectively. Through repeated attempts, participants tested collaborative negotiation and responsiveness as forms of practice.
